Remedia execs, health ministry officials indicted

Two babies died and 23 were injured after drinking Remedia infant formula.

State Prosecutor Eran Shendar has decided to indict former senior Remedia executives and ministry of health employees over the Remedia milk substitute affair. The decision is subject to the right of a hearing before the Central District Attorney, Adv. Rachel Shiber, which will quickly be accorded to those who wish to exercise the right.

Today the Central District Attorney's office announced its decision on eight of the suspects in the affair: former Remedia CEO Gideon Landsberger, Moshe Miller former chair of the Remedia group and owner of the controlling interest in the company, Ministry of Health Food and Nutrition department head Dr. Dorit Nitzan-Klosky, an additional former Remedia executive, and four supervisors at the containment facilities in the Ashdod and Haifa ports, whose responsibility it is to test imported food.

The former Remedia executives are charged, in the draft indictment, with acts which are liable to spread a disease, negligent manslaughter, negligent injury, non-compliance with an official standard, grievous misleading of consumers and obstruction of justice, for which the maximum sentence is three years in prison. Since two babies died in the affair, they will be charged with each offense twice.

The five ministry of health employees are being charged with acts which are liable to spread a disease, the maximum penalty for which is three years in prison.

The affair broke three year ago after a string of baby illnesses all related only through consumption of Remedia milk substitute. Two of the infants died and 23 others were severely injured..
