Free newspaper “Israeli” to take holiday “vacation”

"Israeli": The employees are taking their annual vacation because circulation falls substantially during the holiday season.

Free newspaper “Israeli” will not be published for two weeks. Sources inform ''Globes'' that the paper today notified its employees that they will take a forced vacation from September 23 through October 7, when the Sukkot holiday ends. The paper reportedly has 25-30 employees, not including distributors. The paper has been published continuously five days a week (there is no weekend edition) for the past 22 months.

The sources added that “Israeli” has not paid suppliers, including Israel Railways. A spokesman for the owner, Hirsch Media Ltd., owned by Shlomo Ben-Tzvi, today denied that the time-out in publication, even for a fixed period, implied that it would close down.

The paper said in response, “The employees of ‘Israeli’ are taking their annual vacation because circulation falls substantially during the holiday season. The newspaper will resume its regular operations after the holiday.”

Regarding the non-payment to suppliers, the paper said, “We’re paying all our suppliers and all employees as usual. There are no problems relating to payments.”
