Samsung to open R&D center in Israel

“AP”: The center will be based on Transchip, which Samsung bought a month ago.

“AP” reports that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (KSX:5930) is opening an R&D center in Israel on the basis of Israeli start-up Transchip, which it acquired on October 1. TransChip will be renamed Samsung Semiconductor Israel R&D Center Ltd.

“AP” quotes Samsung spokeswoman Lee Eun-hee as saying that the purchase of Transchip was "to enhance our competitiveness" in CMOS image sensors, which are incorporated into semiconductors used in digital cameras and cameras in mobile phones. Samsung manufactures the sensors.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Samsung plans to expand the R&D center, which currently has 70 employees, and might also expand its activity to new fields.

The “Korea Economic Daily” reports that Samsung paid $70 million for Transchip. Samsung declined to confirm the purchase price.

Transchip was founded in 1999 by chairman and CEO Dr. Viktor Ariel. He will now manage the R&D center. The company develops chipsets for digital cameras.

Samsung Electronics is considered the world’s largest electronics maker, and predicts $100 billion in sales this year. It is the world’s largest supplier of computer memory processors and a leader in the flash memory market.
