Hurvitz, Brodet: Make Israel one of wealthiest countries

The Israel 2028 plan is a strategic socio-economic vision for Israeli society.

Teva chairman Eli Hurvitz, former Ministry of Finance director general David Brodet, and Shaldor chairman and CEO Samuel Friedrich presented the cabinet a plan, called "Israel 2028", which would place Israel among the top 15 countries in terms of GDP per capita within 20 years.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the cabinet that this was not a government initiative and that the government was in no hurry to adopt the plan. "This plan isn't a government initiative, and I do not expect that we'll take binding decisions derived from this wide ranging plan at today's cabinet meeting," he said.

Olmert added, "However, the time has come that Israel should not only deal with day-to-day matters, but also set some kind of attempt at formulating a perspective that we'll pursue over a long time. I thank the team that formulated this plan for its effort, initiative, and its desire to share this initiative with the government."

The Israel 2028 plan is subtitled "A strategic socio-economic vision for a global world". It outlines a series of warning signs facing Israeli society, including the emergence of a dual economy of a high-tech industry on one track and a parallel economy that cannot meet the challenges of globalization on the other; wide income gaps that polarize society; low quality of public education; and governance and infrastructure issues.

The plan calls for the strengthening and improvement of public service by setting up an advisory council at the Prime Minister's Office. It also calls for expanding participation in the labor force.
