Mazor gets new FDA approval

The firm's SpineAssist device gets a nod for a wide range of procedures.

Mazor Surgical Technologies Ltd. (TASE:MZOR) has obtained US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to extend the application of the company's SpineAssist imaging and robotic device for assisting in spinal surgical procedures. The FDA has extended use of SpineAssist to the neck vertebrae, in addition to the upper and lower spine.

The approval will also enable SpineAssist to be used in minimally invasive surgery.

The FDA now also allows the device to be placed on the surgical table instead of on the patient. This permit is essential for use of SpineAssist in conjunction with GO-LIF, which Mazor is jointly developing with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. This procedure enables the setting of two vertebrae from a diagonal position, rather than cutting through the back muscle.
