Walla! gains on Google

15% of surfers have bought a service or software to filter and block unwanted online content.

15% of adult Israeli surfers have bought a service or software to filter and block unwanted online content, according to the TIM/TNS Teleseker Internet survey for May. The survey of adult Jewish surfers (aged 18 and over) examines weekly exposure rates of websites.

Religious users are the most likely to block content; 29% of this population segment blocks content, compared with 13% of secular users.

46% of respondents said that they have surfed for pornography, and 26% said that they visited pornography sites in the past month. This is a male pastime: 43% of men said that they visited pornography sites in the past month, compared with 5% of women.

Google Israel stayed the top website in May, with a weekly exposure rate of 88.7%. Walla! is in second place, at 69.6%, and ynet is in third, at 60.5%. Walla! has widened its gap over ynet and narrowed its gap with Google Israel. Nana10 took over fourth place from YouTube, with a weekly exposure rate of 33.6%. MSN Israel continues to lose ground, slipping to seventh place with a weekly exposure rate of 25.3%. NRG rose to sixth place with 25.9%.

Among economic websites, Globes continues to lead with a weekly exposure rate of 11.1%, compared with 10.4% for TheMarker Globes is also the preferred site at work, with a weekly exposure rate of 11.6%.

The 28th TIM survey included 800 Internet users aged 13 and above constituting a representative nationwide sample of Israel's Jewish population. Israel has an estimated four million surfers. The survey includes supplementary estimates of Arab and new immigrant users.
