Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has announced the names of the 20 start-ups that have won prizes for their applications for its Android mobile operating system in the Android Developer Challenge. Among the winners is Israeli start-up TuneWiki.
The Android is an operating system for mobile telecommunications and software library that Google is promoting. The system, which has attracted considerable interest, is due to be launched in the next few months. The first handset to feature the new system will be the HTC Dream, which will be marketed on the T-Mobile cellular network.
1,800 companies and independent developers took part in the competition. The winners were selected by a panel 100 judges from companies which are all members of the association of companies promoting open source codes for cellphones.
Ten of the companies won prizes of $100,000 and the other ten won prizes of $275,000, including Tune Wiki, which has developed a music player, featuring synchronized lyrics for audio or video, translation, music maps and a social network. A total of $3.75 million in prizes was handed out by Google.
