Google launches Hebrew translation service

The new software supports translations of texts from 30 languages including Hebrew.

Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has the followed the recent launch of the Hebrew version of its Gmail service with the launch of its new translation service Google Translate, which supports translations of texts to and from 30 languages including Hebrew. The program also aligns paragraphs to the left or right margins of the page depending on the direction of the language.

Google Translate enables surfers to paste phrases or words into the search page and translate them. Like translation software company Babylon Ltd. (TASE:BBYL), Google is seeking to translate entire sentences from English or other languages into Hebrew, although these efforts have had little success to date. Automatic software generated translations are still awkward and do not convey the specific meaning of the text clearly. The Google service can, however, translate individual words accurately.

Google says it is aware of the difficulty involved in translating entire sentences to and from different languages and adds that it is constantly working on improvements to the software.
