Manpower: Demand for high-tech workers down

High-tech is suffering from a deep freeze in recruitment.

The latest figures released by Manpower Israel Ltd. show that overall demand for workers in November fell by 6.6% compared with October, and by 11.6% compared with the corresponding month last year.

In the high-tech sector an even sharper fall of 12.9% in demand for employees was recorded in November compared with the previous month, and a drop of 16.2% compared with November 2007. Manpower compiles this index from the number of job ads in newspapers, and it is possible that some of the "wanted" ads are for the purposes of the company's image and not genuine vacancies. Manpower sees high-tech suffering from a deep freeze in recruitment felt across all placement companies in the sector.

The commercial sector saw a 6.6% fall in demand in November compared with October and just a 4.4% drop compared with the same month last year.

The falls in November in overall demand for workers and the demand for high-tech employees," said Manpower Israel CEO Orna Segal, "show that November was clearly a month in which the slowdown in economic activity influenced demand for workers."
