Tel Aviv municipality orders residents to prepare shelters

Deputy mayor: As of now there is no direct threat to Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

The Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality has issued instructions to the city's residents in the event that Hamas rockets reach the city. The instructions relate to the preparedness of private shelters. Recommendations include ensuring that emergency lighting, food supplies, and first aid is available, as well as radios or other means of obtaining information.

The municipality emergency committee, headed by councilman Dr. Moshe Tiomkin convened on Tuesday to discuss procedures. A deputy mayor said, "As of now there is no direct threat to Tel Aviv-Jaffa. No special preparations are necessary, but we're nevertheless making preparations for an emergency."

Tiomkin said, "We cannot ignore the fact that missile fire is reaching cities near Tel Aviv, such as Yavne and Ashdod. There is an implied threat of tension in the north, which is a key threat to Tel Aviv. There is also the threat of riots and violent demonstrations by Israeli Arabs, including residents of Jaffa. That is why we are ready."

In nearby Rishon LeZion, a municipality spokesman issued a statement saying, "Due to the security situation in the south, the city's residents are asked to clean their air raid shelters and prepare them."
