IBM: Less phishing, spam from Israel

6.3% of phishing messages and less than 2% of spam worldwide originated in Israel in 2008.

6.3% of phishing messages worldwide originate in Israel, compared with 2.8% originating in the US, according to the IBM Internet Security System 2008 X Threat Force Trend Report.

Israel is ranked sixth as a source of phishing attacks, behind Spain (15.1% of attacks), Italy (14%), South Korea (10.8%), Brazil (7.2%), and France (6.4%). About 90% of phishing attacks target financial institutions, mostly in North America.

The figures indicate a fall in the proportion of phishing messages sent from Israel. In 2007, 8% of all attacks originated in Israel, which was ranked fourth worldwide. Phishing attacks from the US and France also declined.

Spam originating from Israel was also down. In 2008, less than 2% of spam originated from Israel. Spam originating from the US fell to 9.6% of all spam in 2008 from 15% in 2007. However, spam from Turkey and Russia increased in 2008, continuing a trend that began in 2006, and Russia is the biggest source of spam.
