VocalTec wins South African VoIP contract

The firm will deploy its solution for BEE firm Amatole Telecoms' WiMAX IP network.

VocalTec Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq:VOCL) will supply its Essentra VoIP solution to South African Under-Serviced Area License (USAL) provider Amatole Telecoms Ltd., a Black Empowered Enterprise (BEE) company. VocalTec did not disclose the size of the deal, but market sources estimate it a few hundred thousand dollars. VocalTec will work with local value-added partner RedLinx Ltd. on the project.

VocalTec will deploy its solution over Amatole's WiMAX carrier-grade, converged IP network to support Amatole's requirement to provide customers with innovative residential and business services, over a next-generation network. The solution will enable Amatole to provide subscriber services at reduced cost, while enhancing service flexibility as well as the rapid deployment of value-adding services and applications.

VocalTec president and CEO Ido Gur said, “Amatole’s implementation is an excellent example of how WiMAX service providers in emerging markets can bundle voice services to improve their competitiveness, while leveraging the investment in their existing infrastructure with a fast return on investment."

Gur noted that 70% of WiMAX subscribers are in developing countries, and that VocalTec aimed to increase its market share in these areas.

VocalTec closed at $0.22 on Nasdaq yesterday, giving a market cap of $1.6 million.
