3 firms, all foreign, remain in Haifa cable car tender

The Haifa Bay-Technion route will be 4.4 kilometers long.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that three foreign companies passed the prequalification stage in the tender to build a cable car from Haifa Bay to the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. The project will cost NIS 180-200 million.

The companies are leading international cable car manufacturers Leitner Technologies AG of Italy, Doppelmayr Garaventa Group of Austria and Switzerland, and Poma SA of France. Doppelmayr is known in Israel, having built the cable car at Rosh Naikra and the ski lift at the Mount Hermon.

Ten companies participated in the prequalification stage in the tender. The main criteria in the tender are experience, manufacturing capacity, export capacity, the provision of services, and financial standing. The winner in the tender will be announced by June.

The Haifa Bay-Technion cable car route will be 4.4 kilometers long and run from sea level to an altitude of 460 meters. An eight-passenger car will leave the terminals every eleven seconds, enabling the transport of 2,500 persons per hour. It is due to begin operating in 2010.

Due to the complexity of the project, the tender was divided into three parts: the vendor, which will manufacture the cable cars, a contractor to build the system, and an operator, which will have a franchise contract. The equipment amounts to 60-70% of the total cost of the project.
