Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Nasdaq: TEVA; TASE: TEVA) has made 20th place in the "BusinessWeek" World's Best Companies/Global Top 40 list, compiled by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.

According to A.T. Kearney, Teva achieved an average annual growth of 8.6% and average sales growth of 20.38% in 2004-08. Its market cap was $36.44 billion at the end of 2008, and it had $10.46 billion in sales, 99% of which were outside its home market in Israel.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. (TSE: 7972) was number 1 on the list, followed by Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL).

Threshold conditions for making the list include a minimum of $10 billion in sales in 2008, at least 25% of which came from outside the company's home region, as well as their sales growth and value creation over the past five years. The top 40 come from 18 countries. Technology, telecommunications, digital hardware and services providers stand out in the list.

The traits for a "Best Company" include a commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future. A.T. Kearny chairman Paul Laudicina said, "In an environment of continuous disruptive change, companies that have rigorous strategic planning initiatives that allow them to see over the horizon…are far more likely to win than those that make it up as they go along."
