Comverse Technology Inc. (Pink Sheets: CMVT) today unveiled at 2010 Mobile World Congress its multi-sensual communications and other applications, which it will try to sell to mobile operators. Multi-sensual communications enables the caller to add the aroma of his or her environment or a personal scent to an SMS. The recipient will be able to identify the sender by his or her scent, or perhaps realize that the sender is in a cafe.
Comverse Chief Innovation Officer Daphna Steinmetz said, "This is technology that in future will transmit molecules via the telephone. We can currently provide this as a pilot on just one Nokia handset."
Steinmetz added, "The industry is currently striving to deepen the mobile user's experience and satisfy their insatiable appetite for the Internet. Current technologies enable us to expand the communications experience to include more senses.
Comverse already has a service for linking social networks via ordinary mobile telephones, which is available for mobile operators. Comverse president global sales Dror Bin said, "A lot of messaging is carried out through Facebook or Twitter. We make it possible to send messages from them to the telephone." The service also make it possible to send an SMS to Facebook, or leave a voice mail on a person's Facebook page.
Comverse also demonstrated Location-Aware Messaging with many forms of mobile messaging, including SMS, multimedia messaging (MMS), and visual voicemail. For example, mobile users can receive a map of the real-time location of the person sending them a voice, text, or multimedia message. Or, the receiver of a voicemail can find out the geographic whereabouts of the caller at the time the message was left. The demonstration used map data from Navteq, a global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless and enterprise solutions.
Steinmetz said, “Merging advanced geographic digital information seamlessly with Comverse messaging and visual voicemail adds value to mobile communications."
