Dankner case "a sad story"

Governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer spoke to MKs about Bank Hapoalim.

Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer referred in public for the first time today about the police investigation of former Bank Hapoalim (TASE: POLI) chairman Dan Dankner, calling the episode "a sad story".

Fischer spoke in Tel Aviv today to the Knesset's Finance Committee. He said, "The story of Bank Hapoalim was a sad story. We succeeded in keeping stability at the bank, and that was the goal of our process. I thank the Finance Committee for the backing they gave me."

Fischer spoke a day after it became known that Dankner was questioned by the police.

Danker was questioned by the police on issues of impropriety, apparently related to an investigation into the connection of UK investment fund RP Capital to the attempted acquisition of Turkey's Bank Positif. There are suspicions that Dankner took advantage of his position as chairman of Hapoalim to authorize granting credit of tens of millions of dollars. Former Bank Hapoalim CEO Zvi Ziv was also asked to speak to police.
