Newpan unveils ebook reader for Israel

It is the first ebook device with extensive contracts with major Israeli publishers.

Newpan Ltd. yesterday unveiled the ebook reader that it will distribute in Israel in a few weeks. It is the first ebook device with extensive contracts with major Israeli publishers, including Keter publishing House Ltd., Am Oved Publishers Ltd. Yediot Ahronot Publishing Ltd., Ahuzat Bayit Ltd., Ram Oren's Keshet Publishing House Ltd., Aliyat Hagag Publishers Ltd., Meter, and Tal May.

The name of the ebook reader has not been disclosed. The device has a six-inch touch screen, 1.2 gigabit internal memory, and can download more than 2,000 titles. It has an expansion card, bought separately, which expands the memory to 32 gigabits.

Books can be downloaded from the ebook online bookstore either via wireless Internet or by USB port. Newpan claims that the ebook's batteries are enough to read continuously for hours. The ebook also has a MP3 music player and audio books function, font resizer, and personal files reader in PDF format.

Bookseller Steimatzky Group Ltd., Newpan's partner in importing the ebook, will apparently market it. Newpan and Steimatzky have begun an internal launch of the ebook among employees, and it will soon become available for the general public.

"We believe that we're facing a revolution in Israel's reading culture. We feel committed and proud to participate in the first venture that will combine all the features of the ebook and its marketing," said Newpan VP marketing Zvika Shenfeld.
