34 Israeli proposals win EU R&D grants

The latest grants boost the total to Israeli firms under the EU7 to date to €290 million.

The fifth call for papers by the EU Seventh Framework Progamme for Research and Development (FP7) for joint projects in software, hardware, and communications has resulted in 34 projects by Israeli and European companies, with an aggregate budget of €17 million.

The latest grants boost the total grants to Israeli companies under the EU7 to date to €290 million.

Israeli winners in the present round of grants include Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR), Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1), Mellanox Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:MLNX; TASE:MLNX), and Afcon Industries Ltd. (TASE: AFIN), as well as start-ups Comsys Mobile Ltd., Ethernity Networks Ltd., Emza Visual Sense Inc., and LiveU Ltd. Israeli units of global companies, including IBM Israel Ltd's R&D center in Haifa, SAP Israel Ltd' R&D center, Applied Materials Israel Ltd., and KLA-Tencor Israel Ltd. have also won grants.

The Israeli companies are heading five of these projects, which the Office of the Chief Scientist said was an achievement.

Chief Scientist Dr. Eli Opper, who heads the Israel-European R&D Directorate (ISERD) steering committee, said, "The results of the call for papers testifies to the great importance of Israeli participation in European programs in general, and the synergies created between European and Israeli industry in particular."
