Gov't approves new airport near Eilat

A Timna airport will mostly serve flights to and from Europe.

The government today approved a proposal by Minister of Transport Israel Katz to begin detailed planning for a new international airport at Timna. The planning will cost NIS 56 million, and take about a year. The new airport will cost NIS 1.7 billion and take three years to build. When completed, it will replace Eilat's current airport.

The Israel Airports Authority will finance the detailed plan from its own resources. The tender for the planning is scheduled to be concluded in September.

While the planning is underway, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance will select an international consultant to examine the Airports Authority's plan for the new airport, and submit its conclusions within 45 days.

The Timna airport will be 18 kilometers north of Eilat. It will serve both international flights, mainly to and from Europe,Eilat, as well as domestic flights.
