Israel to send police mission to Haiti
The police personnel will operate as a part of an Italian-Israeli-Serbian combined force.
The mission will assist the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti to assist in upholding public order and stabilizing the situation in the wake of last January's earthquake that destroyed the capital, Port au Prince, and killed over 215,000 people, left hundreds of thousands injured, and damaged the homes of approximately three million people.
Israel will cover the mission's estimated NIS 2 million in costs beyond the costs financed by the UN.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the police mission was an important component that expresses the nature of the Jewish People. "This is a Jewish and humanistic action and it follows up on the rapidly-organized activity that preceded it after the Haitian earthquake."
