YouTube launches Hebrew interface

YouTube's popularity has greatly grown in recent months, surpassing Hebrew news site ynet and portal Walla!

Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has created a Hebrew version of another product: its YouTube unit today announced the launch of a Hebrew interface. An Israeli user can customize the site and see all Hebrew language content. To convert the screen to Hebrew, scroll down to the bottom, click on "Location: Israel", and the screen opens to the Hebrew language page.

Google Israel VP marketing Riki Drori said, "Two years after we launched YouTube in Israel, during which Israeli users have become an integral part of the international YouTube community, we are pleased to launch the Hebrew interface today. We believe that this will enable the Israeli user to share, search, and view video content more easily."

YouTube Israel was launched in July 2008, with some customization of the standard YouTube site to help Israeli users find popular video clips that were relevant to them. According to the monthly TIM Internet use surveys, YouTube's popularity has greatly grown in recent months, surpassing Hebrew news site ynet and portal Walla! The TIM survey for July ranked YouTube as Israel's third most popular site with a weekly exposure rate of 64.3%.

Four months ago, YouTube launched in Israel revenue generating content sharing. Users can opt to include advertising on clips they upload, and receive a share of the revenue from the ads, based on the number of hits.
