Offshore drilling rig nears Israeli gas fields

The Sedco Express was leased by Noble Energy and will be used for drilling in the Leviathan and Tamar fields.

The drilling season will get underway this week with the arrival of the Sedco Express drilling rig. The platform was leased by Noble Energy (NYSE: NBL). According to the marinetraffic.com website, the rig is currently south of Crete and moving toward Israel at 6.2 knots.

The Leviathan structure, about 135 kilometers west of Hadera, is the first drilling target for the platform. The Sedco Express will apparently be replaced in January by the Pride North America, which has deeper drilling capacity. After the switch, the Sedco Express will continue north and drill in the Tamar lease.

Sedco Express is owned by offshore drilling giant Transcocean.
