"Israel Today" exits train stations

A paper from Hebrew daily "Yediot Ahronot" will be distributed instead.

Freesheet "Israel Today" is no longer being distributed at train stations, three years after distribution began, after negotiations between the paper and Hedria Train Media Ltd., which owns the advertising franchise at Israel Railways, broke down.

The franchise will now be transferred to Hebrew daily "Yediot Ahronot", which will have exclusive rights to distribute newspapers at train stations and their environs. Sources inform ''Globes'' that "Yediot Ahronot" will use the franchise to promote its own newspapers, including tens of thousands of copies of its business supplement "Calcalist". Another paper will likely be distributed in the future.

Hedria wanted to keep the price level previously reached between "Israel Today" and Israel Railways, following a tender. However, because other newspapers are distributed outside train stations, "Israel Today", owned by Sheldon Adelson, sought a price cut.

Israel Railways plans to expand the radius of enforcement against the distribution of newspapers in the environs of train stations.

"Israel Today" said in response, ""Israel Today" will continue to be distributed everywhere suitable, including at sites near train stations."
