Histadrut head: Gov't extinguishes fires, doesn’t lead

Ofer Eini: The State of Israel has another fire department; it is the government.

"We already knew about everything written and said in the State Comptroller's report, and more, but no one did anything," said Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini today. "Fortunately, there are real heroes in this story, and they are the firemen, who fight each fire with substandard conditions. On this day, I am proud to represent them."

Eini made the comment at the opening of the pension savings conference of Migdal Insurance and Financial Holdings Ltd. (TASE: MGDL), in response to the Carmel fire and the harsh report by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss on the Fire and Rescue Services.

Eini said that he hoped that, for the first time, the authorities would really listen to the firemen, and institute the necessary reform to build a better fire department. He took the opportunity to fire some barbs against the government, saying, "The State of Israel has another fire department; it is the government. Instead of leading measures, it puts out fires. That's why we heard yesterday that the diplomatic process, and I hear the despair of the people at every level."
