Consumer Confidence Index up in April

The index rose by 4.2 points in April after rising 1.9 points in March.

The Consumer Confidence Index, compiled by Globes Research and pwc Israel, rose by 4.2 points in April 2011 to 87.6 points (baseline 1996 = 100), after rising 1.9 points in March, and falling 7.7 points in February.

April's rise in related to other evidence about economic growth, which was accompanied by gains in the capital market. However, there is concern about the state of the economy in the future, which can be attributed to the appreciation of the shekel and the ramifications of the 50-basis point rise in the interest rate at the end of March.

The Consumer Confidence Index was fairly stable between September 2009 and the end of 2010, moving within a range of 12-16 percentage points with little deviation. The index's changes in the past few months - 11 percentage points in January, 9.4 percentage points in February, 9.5 percentage points in March, and 9 percentage points in April - are a clear downward deviation from that range.
