Gov't wants to raise women's retirement age to 67

The move would equalize men and women's retirement age.

The government representatives on the public committee for raising the retirement of women, chaired by Ministry of Finance Budget Director Udi Nissan recommend raising women's retirement age to 67, equalizing it with men.

Today's meeting broke up when the representatives of the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) and Na'amat - Movement of Working Women & Volunteers walked out in protest to the proposal.

Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz appointed the committee three months ago. The ministry's statement said, "By law, women's retirement age is 62, and it is expected to rise to 64." It is therefore unclear if the committee has the authority to raise women's retirement age beyond 64.

Most members of the Knesset Finance Committee oppose raising women's retirement age to 64, let alone beyond that. The committee must approve any change in the retirement age.
