Third Iron Dome system to be deployed next week

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that the missile defense battery will protect Ashdod.

Minister of Defense Ehud Barak said today that a third Iron Dome missile defense battery would be deployed at Ashdod within ten days to protect the city. He said that Israel would soon have an inventory of thousands of interceptor missiles.

Barak was speaking during a visit to the factory of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) unit Elta Systems in Ashdod, which manufactures the radar system for the Iron Dome anti-rocket platform.

There are currently two Iron Dome systems operational, protecting Beersheva and Ashkelon. Over the past few weeks, these batteries have intercepted dozens of rockets fired from Gaza at those cities. The Iron Dome systems are manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd.

"We're nearly at the beginning of September, and the Israel Security Agency, the Israel Police, and the IDF will be ready not to allow terrorists to disrupt people's routines in Tel Aviv and other cities," Barak said.

"We're on high alert in the south against a possible attack similar to the attack ten days ago," he added, commenting on today's rocket fire, which wounded eight people, and the stabbing outside a club in Tel Aviv.
