MMAtech obtains CE Mark for knee implants

The knee implants market is worth billions of dollars a year, and rising as population age.

MMAtech Ltd. has obtained EU CE Mark certification for its low-friction polymer knee implants. The knee implants market is worth billions of dollars a year, and rising as population age.

Knee implants face severe wear and tear, which is liable to cause them to crack, damaging the kneecap and other bones, causing inflammations, pain, and bone weakness requiring further surgery. Metal fragments from implants are also liable to enter the bloodstream, with toxic effects.

MMAtech's polymer implant is based on materials originally developed by NASA. The material has self-lubricating features (similar to Teflon) to resist friction. Clinical trials showed that the material greatly reduces the creation of metal fragments from implants.

MMAtech has raised $1 million from private investors, and is in talks with two strategic partners, one in the US and the other in Europe, to market and distribute its product. One of these partners might also finance a clinical trial. The company is also seeking investment to finance a clinical trial in Israel and to set up a cheaper production process for its next product - an artificial kneecap. The company is a graduate of the Yozmot Granot Initiative Center incubator.
