Tel Aviv light rail tunnel tender to be published Thursday

The cost of digging tunnels for the Red Line and the Green Line is several billion shekels.

Minister of Transport Israel Katz has instructed NTA - Metropolitan Mass Transit System Ltd. to publish the international tender tomorrow for digging the tunnels for the two lines of the Tel Aviv light railway - the Red Line and the Green Line. The cost of the project is several billion shekels.

Two parallel 11-kilometer tunnels will be dug for the Red Line at a depth of 20 meters. The Green Line will have two parallel 4.6-kilometer tunnels.

Katz said that the Metropolitan Tel Aviv mass transit project was the most important project underway in Israel. "Regrettably, realization of the Tel Aviv mass transit project has been delayed for a long time, and the government decision, which I led to get the Red Line off the ground as part of the state budget was an important step in getting Israel's largest project underway."

Katz added that the light rail's first two lines would be inaugurated within a few years. The Red Line is scheduled to open in 2017, and work on the Green Line is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
