BioView acquires genetic testing rights

The company announced today that it has acquired the rights to Smart Type Karyotyping from Digital Scientific of Cambridge, UK.

BioView Ltd. (TASE:BIOV) is entering the genetic testing field. The company announced today that it has acquired the rights to Smart Type Karyotyping from Digital Scientific of Cambridge, UK.

BioView has successfully integrated the software in its Duet-3, Allegro, and Accord automated scanning and classification workstations for the scanning and classification of cells via fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) and brightlight microscopy.

Karyotype testing is carried out as part of amniotic fluid and chorionic villus examinations that are done during pregnancy. With the addition of this new test, BioView has expanded the number of products it offers laboratories that carry out genetic testing (cytogenetics).

The integration of these two systems into one unit will assist BioView in penetrating markets, especially outside of the US, which are interested in receiving extensive service packages for multiple testing in a single device. The target market for this product is 4,000 clinical and research laboratories worldwide, that offer FISH and karyotype testing.

BioView CEO and president Dr. Alan Schwebel sees the new product as the continuation of the company’s strategy to increase its market penetration into cytogenetics laboratories. “Many potential customers are interested in purchasing as many products as possible from one single supplier,” Schwebel said.

Schwebel continued, “In addition to our recent agreement with Iris Sample Processing, through which BioView will become a worldwide distributor of their FISH Slide Preparation Products, the addition of the karyotype software will enable BioView to supply cytogenetics laboratories with everything they need to analyze genes and chromosomes.”
