Smartphone firewall co Lacoon Security raises $2.5m

Check Point co-founder Shlomo Kramer and Michael Boodaei made the investment.

Lacoon Security Ltd. has raised $2.5 million from Shlomo Kramer, the CEO of Imperva Inc. (NYSE: ) and a co-founder of Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP), and from Michael Boodaei, the CEO of anti-malware and phishing company Trusteer Ltd.

Enterprise security has been hugely affected by the rapid spread of smartphones and tablets, which while allowing employees access to e-mails, documents, and company applications, exposes enterprises to spyware and malware via these same devices, as well as to theft of confidential material. Current solutions to smartphone IT security has been by companies' IT units, but they cannot protect iPhones and Android smartphones from becoming infected by malware.

IT security experts Kramer and Boodaie have invested in Lacoon Security, which is developing a security solution for smartphones and tablets that functions in the same way as a firewall for PCs. The solution analyzes the device's data communications via Wi-Fi and cellular network access to identify malware or leaks of confidential information.

Lacoon Security CEO Michael Shaulov founded the company. Its team includes veterans of the IDF Unit 8200 signal intelligence and code decryption unit and civilian IT companies.

Lacoon Security's solution does not require installing software on the smartphone, unlike all current IT security technologies on the market, and which are therefore limited by the manufacturers' restrictions. Such restrictions can be highly significant, especially for Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) devices, and greatly hinder locating and filtering malware. Lacoon Security's technology can located and filter smartphone malware via the Internet, and is therefore not restricted by smartphone manufacturers' restrictions.

In a statement, Kramer and Boodaie said, "Lacoon Security has demonstrated that it has proprietary technology that deals with the threats from the use of smartphones and tablets at companies and organizations. We are sure that the solution will offer a critical security layer for every enterprise that uses mobile devices. We believe that many of the sophisticated threats that we will see in the coming years can only be identified by technologies like the proprietary technology of Lacoon Security."
