"Haaretz" to fire dozens

The newspaper will fire 32 employees, while its business supplement "TheMarker" has not yet drawn up its list of layoffs.

Hebrew daily "Haaretz" and its business supplement "TheMarker" will fire dozens of employees. "Haaretz" will fire 32 employees, while "TheMarker" has not yet drawn up its list of layoffs. The paper's journalists' committee told employees at an emergency meeting yesterday that the layoffs will be made by Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, in mid-September.

The journalists' committee said that management was planning the layoffs in several rounds, and it notified management that it would discuss the cutbacks on a comprehensive basis, not by department.

Employees have not yet decided how to respond to the layoffs, but a source on the journalists' committee told "Globes" that labor sanctions were likely.

The layoffs at "Haaretz" are part of the latest wave of layoffs at Israeli newspapers, including "Ma'ariv" and "Yediot Ahronot", both of which are firing scores of employees. "Yediot Ahronot" blamed Sheldon Adelson's freesheet "Israel Today" for the current condition of Israel's newspaper market.
