Demand for workers rises

The number of private sector job vacancies rose by 18% to 67,400 in September from 57,000 in August.

The number of private sector job vacancies rose by 18.2% to 67,400 in September 2012 from 57,000 in August, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported yesterday.

Vacancies as a proportion of total jobs rose to 3% in September from 2.6% in August. There were 3.3% fewer private sector job vacancies in September compared with September 2011.

The largest increase in job vacancies was in trade and retail, where there were 4,300 more vacancies in September than in August.

However, the number of private sector job vacancies fell to 63,900 in the third quarter from 65,900 in the second quarter and 68,900 in the first quarter. There were 63,100 private sector job vacancies in the third quarter, after deducting seasonal factors.

The number of job vacancies for engineers in general, and computer engineers in particular, fell to 3,620 jobs in September from 3,820 jobs in August.
