Freescale Israel fires 100-200 employees

The semiconductor company is laying off employees in the DSP and multimedia chip departments.

After years of losses, Freescale Semiconductor Israel Ltd. is firing 100-200 of its 500 employees. The Herzliya-based company notified employees today.

Freescale Semiconductor Inc., formerly Motorola Semiconductors, was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in a $17.6 billion takeover in 2006, the largest high-tech acquisition at that time. The company, the largest producer of processors for the US car industry, subsequently suffered from massive debts. The company restructured its debts and improved its performance, including by firing 120 employees in Israel in 2009.

Most of the latest layoffs are in two departments - the DSP department and the multimedia chip department.
