Trade deficit balloons to multiyear high

Israel's trade deficit rose to NIS 9.8 billion in October 2012.

Israel's trade deficit ballooned to NIS 9.8 billion in October 2012, its highest level in years, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today. The import of goods totaled NIS 26.9 billion in October and export of goods totaled NIS 17.1 billion.

Export of goods were 68.9% of imports (excluding ships, aircraft, and diamonds) in January-October. The trade deficit averaged NIS 6.4 billion a month during this period, giving an annualized deficit of NIS 76.3 billion, up from NIS 52.2 billion in 2011 and NIS 29.0 billion in 2010.

In trend data, imports of goods (excluding ship, aircraft, diamonds, and fuel) rose by an annualized 3.1% in August-October, after rising by an annualized 6.9% in May-July. Exports of goods (excluding ships, aircraft, and diamonds) rose by an annualized 2.2% in August-October, after rising by an annualized 10.7% in May-July.
