Gazans smuggling in Chinese cars through tunnels

Hundreds of new Chinese cars made by Geely, JAC and Chery that are assembled in Egypt have reached Gaza in recent months.

Although sales of Chinese cars in Israel are not taking off, in Gaza imports of Chinese vehicles are flourishing. Last week, the Chinese new agency "Xinhua" wrote an article about the growing import of Chinese cars from Egypt to Gaza. The article reported that hundreds of new Chinese cars made by Geely, JAC and Chery that are assembled in Egypt have reached Gaza in recent months where they are enormously popular in both the taxi and private vehicle markets.

The Chinese journalist interviewed one of the importers who said that over 400 cars had been imported in three months. The importer said, "New dual drive Chinese cars are cheaper in Gaza than 2008 Korean made models. These cars are spacious and very passenger friendly."

The article did not explain how the cars reached Gaza when taking into account that all land border terminals are closed. But sources in the vehicle sector believe that the cars are driven to Gaza through "super tunnels" large enough for the assembled vehicles to travel through.
