Flooding halts Tel Aviv-Haifa trains

Earlier in the day seven people were trapped by floods at Herzliya railway station before being rescued by local firemen.

Flooding in Netanya closed down the Tel Aviv-Haifa railway line. Trains were halted in both directions from 11.30 this morning, Israel Railways announced. Normal services were resumed after several hours. Earlier in the day seven people were trapped by floods at the Herzliya train station before being rescued by local firemen. Traffic Police have closed the entrance to Shivat Hakochavim Avenue in Herzliya from the direction of the northbound Ayalon Highway.

Fire and Rescue Services Herzliya station spokesman Yaron Koren told Channel 2 News, "Our teams rescued seven trapped people and a dog. They were carried by a high vehicle to dry land." He added, "Other vehicles trapped by the flood were also rescued."

The winter storm system that entered our region over the weekend will continue today, and there is concern about further damage from high winds, which are expected to reach 120 km/h. Weather damage yesterday included several fallen trees in Ramat Gan, which damaged power lines and cut power in the area for several hours.

Most of the rain fell in the north and along the northern coastal plain. Snow is forecast to fall on Mount Hermon, and rain will fall as far south as the Sharon. No rain is forecast in greater Tel Aviv or in the Jerusalem mountains before this evening.

More thunderstorms and high winds are forecast later this week from the north through to the Negev. Snow will fall on Mount Hermon and light snow is also forecast to dust mountain peaks above 1,000 meters in the Golan and in the Galilee, but it is not expected to last. Road conditions are hazardous, with a risk of skidding, and roads in the northern Golan Heights may be closed.

Storm conditions are continuing in most of the country, and there is danger of floods and flash flooding. Wind gusts will exceed 100 km/h on Monday, causing possible damage, including fallen trees and traffic lights, and possible local blackouts. Winds will ease on Tuesday, but rain will continue in the north and center of the country. Temperatures will fall further.

Another cold snap and more rain is forecast for Tuesday night, and snow may fall in mountains in the center of the country on Wednesday. The rain is forecast to continue through Thursday and snow is forecast for Mount Hermon and possibly on mountains in the north. The storm will only ease at the end of the week.
