Steinitz slams own officials on taxes

"Economic policy in the State of Israel is set by the prime minister and finance minister, and not by officials who give anonymous briefings."

Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz has attacked officials of his own ministry who said yesterday, anonymously, that NIS 4-5 billion would have to be raised in new taxes, and that promises by Steinitz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that there was no need to raise taxes were divorced from reality.

"Economic policy in the State of Israel is set by the prime minister and the minister of finance, and not by officials who give anonymous briefings," said a press statement issued on Steinitz's behalf this morning. "The amount of the reported deficit will not affect citizens' pockets, as we have already taken the necessary steps on taxation, and there is no plan for further measures," the statement continued.
