Tower, ON Semiconductor to team on screens

The two companies will deliver advanced programmable power management integrated circuits for display panels for computer monitors and televisions.

Specialty foundry Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (Nasdaq: TSEM; TASE: TSEM), which markets as TowerJazz, and ON Semiconductor Inc. (Nasdaq: ONNN), will collaborate to deliver advanced programmable power management integrated circuits (PMICs) and high voltage level shifter with VCom for the high-end display panels for computer monitors and televisions. Market sources estimate that the collaboration could generate millions of dollars in revenue annually for Tower.

Tower will use its latest TS35 power management platform for design and manufacturing in the project. This component can drive very large loads with different voltage ranges and has a programmable power sequence that allows the product to be applied to various applications. To accommodate display panel market requirements, the component has a 42-volt differential to drive both positive and negative voltages to support essential high voltage product specifications.

Tower cites a study by NPD DisplaySearch, which says that the global television market was forecast at 245 million units in 2012 and that several key high value segments of the television business such as large screen sizes and LED-backlit LCD televisions are expected to continue to grow.

"The long-standing partnership between TowerJazz and ON Semiconductor has produced many successful products for various markets, said TowerJazz Design Center and Design Enablement VP Ori Galzur. "TowerJazz's design and manufacturing knowledge accelerates development time, allowing faster production ramp. This enables our customers to focus on their system knowledge while we assist by providing design services and save them the learning curve."
