State Comptroller mulls Treasury probe into deficit

State Comptroller Joseph Shapira is concerned about the Budget Department's conduct regarding the budget, in view of the deficit.

State Comptroller Joseph Shapira is considering an investigation into the conduct of the Ministry of Finance's Budget Department over the 2011-12 biennial state budget, because of the huge deficit in the 2012 budget. The budget deficit was NIS 39 billion in 2012, 4.2% of GDP, and more than double the original target.

The State Comptroller's Office has not yet decided on the extent or the structure of the investigation, but Shapira is concerned about the Budget Department's conduct regarding the budget, in view of the deficit. Shapira's aides are increasingly calling for a thorough investigation into how the budget is drawn up and managed.

The State Comptroller's Office said, "At this stage, the State Comptroller's Office is reviewing the issue, and on the basis of the results, it will decided if and when to conduct an investigation into the 2011-12 budget and its management."
