Mon: Banks fail to lift market

Hapoalim and Leumi enjoyed strong gains, but the telcos were the day's biggest losers.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) was flat today. The Tel Aviv 25 Index edged up 0.03% to 1,195.58 points, the Tel Aviv 100 Index edged up 0.06% to 1,063.67 points, but the BlueTech 50 Index fell 0.50% to 314.83 points. Turnover was NIS 966.2 million.

The TASE was flat today, after seesawing throughout the session, after losses on European markets and at the opening on Wall Street.

In the foreign currency market, the Bank of Israel set the shekel-dollar representative exchange rate at NIS 3.685/$, up 0.08% on Friday's rate, and set the shekel-euro representative exchange rate at NIS 4.998/€, down 0.58%

In the bond market, long-term Shahar unlinked shekel government bonds were unchanged and long term Galil CPI-linked government fell by up to 0.3%. The corporate bond benchmark Tel-Bond 20 Index rose 0.14%

In the stock market, banks led market gains, with Bank Hapoalim (TASE: POLI) up 2.3% on the day's biggest turnover of NIS 66 million, and Bank Leumi (TASE: LUMI) up 1.3%.

Telcos were the day's biggest losers, led by a 1.8% drop by Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) and 1.7% drop by Partner Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTNR; TASE: PTNR). Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (TASE: BEZQ) fell 1.4%, following yesterday's breakdown at its mobile unit Pelephone Communications Ltd..

On the Tel Aviv 100 Index, insurance companies also gained ground, led by a 1.7% rise by Clal Insurance Enterprises Holdings Ltd. (TASE: CLIS).

Allot Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq:ALLT; TASE: ALLT) rose 2.9%, ahead of the publication of its financials tomorrow. Clal Finance said today, "We expect a relatively weak quarter, which has already been priced into the share as far as we're concerned. We expect the focus to be the guidance for 2013."

Clal Biotechnology Industries Ltd. (TASE: CBI) rose 3.6% and Elbit Medical Technologies Ltd. (TASE:EMTC) fell 3.1%, after their subsidiary Gamida Cell Ltd. announced positive results in a blood cancer trial.

Brainsway Ltd. (TASE:BRIN) rose another 4% in heavy trading. Small-cap Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd. (TASE:CFBI; Bulletin Board: CANFY) fell 24.7%, after announcing a secondary offering; Biocancell Therapeutics Ltd. (TASE:BICL) rose 52.3%, after reporting positive results in a pancreatic cancer trial; and BiolineRX Ltd. (Nasdaq: BLRX); TASE:BLRX) fell 11.3%, after announcing that it will announce the results of a clinical trial in March.
