Average salary rose 3.8% in 2012

The average gross monthly salary was NIS 9,022 in seasonally adjusted prices in 2012, 3.8% higher than in 2011, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today, belying the public's impression that salaries have fallen. The average salary rose by 5.3% in nominal prices compared with 2011, the year of the social protest against the high cost of living and low salaries.

The number of salaried employees was 3.11 million at the end of 2012.

Most of the rise in the average national salary occurred in the second half of the year, when it rose by an annualized 3.1% in the fourth quarter, after rising 4.2% in the third quarter. The number of employees, however, was unchanged.

The non-financial sector was the largest sector, with 2.03 million employees (65% of all employees), and with an average gross monthly salary of NIS 9,387. There 577,400 public sector employees, 18.6% of all employees, and with an average salary of NIS 9,474.

There were 102,200 financial sector employees (3.3% of all employees), with an average gross monthly salary of NIS 16,302. At the other end of the scale were 311,600 household employees (6.8% of all employees), with an average salary of NIS 4,137; and 189,000 non-profit employees, with an average salary of NIS 5,253.
