Intel in talks to buy Omek Interactive - report

Intel is in talks to buy the Beit Shemesh based gesture recognition and tracking technology firm, VentureBeat reports.

Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) is in talks to acquire the Beit Shemesh based gesture recognition and tracking technology firm Omek Interactive, VentureBeat reports.

One source told "VentureBeat" that Intel's rivals Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. are both also considering making an offer, although the source added that a bidding war for Omek is unlikely.

"VentureBeat" notes that gesture control technology is attractive to these companies as it offers a way to simplify increasingly sophisticated devices, draw customers to sci-fi-like devices, and consume a lot of computing power that can be produced by their future chips.

Intel Capital, which led Omek's third financing round in July 2011 when it raised $7 million, declined to comment on the report.

One source told "VentureBeat" that Omek needs to find another round of financing, so the timing on the bidding is no surprise.

Omek Interactive CEO Janine Kutliroff told "VentureBeat, “Omek is always having conversations of a strategic or financial nature. We never comment on rumors in the marketplace.”
