Housing starts down nationwide, up sharply in Judea and Samaria

In the first quarter, housing starts in Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria rose 176% over the preceding quarter and 355% over the corresponding quarter.

Housing starts fell 8% to 10,304 housing starts in the first quarter of 2013, from 11,210 housing starts in the preceding quarter, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today. Housing starts were down 3.4% from the corresponding quarter of 2012 and 5% from the corresponding quarter of 2011.

The Central District had the largest number of housing starts in the first quarter, at 2,889 units, up 22% over the preceding quarter, but down 20.5% from the corresponding quarter. Housing starts in the Haifa, Tel Aviv, Northern and Southern districts all fell, but rose in the Jerusalem District and in Judea and Samaria.

Housing starts in the Jerusalem Municipality rose 87% to 913 apartments in the first quarter from 504 apartments in the corresponding quarter. Housing starts in Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria rose 176% to 865 units in the first quarter from 313 units in the preceding quarter and rose 355% from 190 units in the corresponding quarter.
