Microsoft, GM, GE collaborate in Israeli Weekathon

The Israeli development centers EMC, Texas Instruments, HP, Alcatel Lucent, and Sears are also collaborating on several projects.

Eight Israeli development centers - Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT), General Motors Company (NYSE: GM), General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ), Sears Holdings Corporation (Nasdaq: SHLD), Alcatel Lucent SA (Euronext; NYSE: ALU), and Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE: TSN) - are collaborating on several projects at the IATI-MNC Weekathon Event.

The Weekathon was initiated by the Forum of Multinationals Israeli Development Centers at the Israel Advanced Technology Industries (IATI). Each development center sent 3-5 representatives who were severed from their usual work environment, and placed in a special room provided by Microsoft Israel. Microsoft Israel R&D center general manager Yoram Yaacovi serves as chairman of the forum.

The joint programs include an information-sharing system for government agencies' procedures; an information-sharing platform for movies and music between cars; an electricity consumption meter for devices suitable for any country; a hand gesture recognition system for home entertainment systems; and mobile apps for use in vehicles.

IATI CEO Karin Mayer Rubinstein said, "Response to the project was huge, and we hope to turn this into a tradition to allow as many companies as possible to participate."
