Average salary up in March-May

The average gross national salary rose an annualized 1.4% in March-May to NIS 8,952.

The average gross national salary rose by an annualized 1.4% in March-May 2013 to NIS 8,952, after rising by an annualized 1.9% in the three preceding months, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today. The number of salaried employees rose by 0.5% over the same period to 3,915,000 people.

Following the change in the Central Bureau of Statistics' classifications of industries and professions for the purpose of calculating average salaries in them, Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) (TASE: ELEC.B22) and Mekorot National Water Company employees no longer top the wage charts, and have been superseded by "mining and quarrying employees", basically Israel Chemicals Ltd. (TASE: ICL) employees, who have an average gross monthly salary of NIS 24,015. This figure comes despite an annualized 16% drop in March-May, after an annualized drop of 9.7% in December-February.

IEC and Mekorot employees would have taken second place in the salary rankings, but the Central Bureau of Statistics added sewage workers to the water and electricity workers classification, dragging it down to third place, with an average gross national salary of NIS 16,832. Finance, banking and insurance employees are in second place, with an average salary of NIS 17,812.
