Gov't to shorten summer school vacation

Under the proposed reform, the school year will continue into July, partly in a summer camp format.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Minister of Finance Yair Lapid and Minister of Education Shai Piron will announce, at a joint press conference tomorrow, the shortening of the summer school vacation. The press conference may be postponed because of the tensions with Syria.

Under the proposed reform, the school year will continue into July, partly in a summer camp format. Currently, the school year ends on June 30, and the following school year begins in the last week of August.

The lack of coordination between schoolchildren's vacation and their parents' vacation, and especially the large difference in vacation days, disrupts and damages the economy, as many parents are forced to spend heavily on activities for their children during the summer, or have to take their children to work.

The teachers will have to agree to the proposed reform. They consider the large number of vacation days as a kind of compensation on their low pay. The cost of the change is uncertain, or who will bear the expense, which is expected to be substantial.
