Slight fall in number of tourists coming to Israel

A 1% drop in tourists to 1.9 million in January-August was offset by a 7% increase in the number of day visitors to 400,000.

2.3 million visitors visited Israeli in January-August 2013, 0.3% more than in the corresponding period of 2012, and 7% more than in the corresponding period of 2011, the Central Bureau of Statistics reports. A 1% drop in tourists to 1.9 million in January-August was offset by a 7% increase in the number of day visitors to 400,000. 1.7 million tourists arrived by air, 155,000 came on cruise ships, and 153,000 came via the border crossings.

The number of visitors fell to 284,000 in August 2013, 5% fewer than in August 2012, but 5% more than in August 2011. The number of tourists fell to 241,000 in August, 3% fewer than in August 2012. The Ministry of Tourism attributes the drop to an 82% decline in the number of day visitors from Sinai, due to the instability in Egypt.
