Shaul Meridor tapped to head new gov't housing co

Shaul Meridor is the leading candidate to head the new government housing company that is due to build tens of thousands of rental apartments.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Shaul Meridor, who last week left the Ministry of Finance Budget Department after 11 years, is the leading candidate to head the new government housing company that is due to build tens of thousands of rental apartments.

Two weeks ago, the government approved the housing cabinet's decision to establish a new government company to handle Minister of Finance Yair Lapid's ambitious program to build 150,000 rental apartments. Lapid had wanted Uri Shani, a friend and advisor on real estate, to head the company, but the bitter criticism against the appointment has left Shani pulling the strings from behind the scenes instead.
