VMware wins NIS 100m IDF contract

The Ministry of Defense has chosen VMware solutions for virtualization of the army's servers and data centers.

With a view to the transfer of IDF bases to the south in the coming years, the Ministry of Defense has chosen VMware solutions for virtualization of the army's servers and data centers. The contract, worth about NIS 100 million, is the largest the company has won in Israel since opening its Israeli branch a few years ago for a period of three years with an option on a two-year extension.

VMware provides infrastructure for improving the usage of enterprise computing systems. Under the agreement with the IDF, it will supply almost its entire product offering, the most advanced part of which consists of solutions for making the set-up of data centers, one of the main aspects of the IDF's move south, more efficient and cheaper. At a press company held by the company in Israel today, VMware country manager Israel Ra'anan Biber said that the company's activity in Israel was growing at an annual rate of 40-50%.

In the past decade, the IDF's computing systems have included a large number of virtual servers. VMware says that all of the IDF's main server farms are now based on its platforms, and that 80% of the servers used by the army are virtual, that is, based on software alone, and not physical.

VMware Mediterranean region manager Shmuel Antebi said that the deal represented a basis for a quantum leap in the company's business with the IDF.
